    Shock Bushings & Star Nuts

The Most Important Things at a Glance: Star Nut & Damper Bushings

    • Damper bushings: connect the damper and frame of your full-suspension or e-MTB.
    • Note dimensions: bolt diameter & mounting width vary (e.g., Fox damper bushings or Rock Shox damper bushings).
    • Star nut (also known as a fork claw/claw nut): preloads the headset in aluminum/steel steerer tubes.
    • Carbon fork: always use an expander instead of a star nut.

Function of the Star Nut and Damper Bushings

We'll show you the function of the star nut and damper bushings as components and parts of the suspension system.

Star Nut: Connection between Stem, Fork & Frame

The star nut – also called a fork claw or claw nut – is part of the headset system. It ensures that the stem can be clamped securely and without play on the steerer tube. The nut is inserted into the steerer tube and, via the top cap, preloads the headset to the correct tension. It is driven in straight and evenly. Once installed, it remains permanently in the steerer tube.

For aluminum and steel forks, the classic star nut is standard. For carbon steerer tubes, however, an expander is used, as a star nut would damage the material.

Damper Bushing: Link between Frame and Damper

Damper bushings are small but central components for full-suspension bikes. They connect the bike's damper to the frame and ensure play-free mounting. Differences primarily exist in the mounting width (e.g., 22.2 mm) and the bolt diameter (usually 8 or 10 mm). Therefore, there are special Fox damper bushings or Rock Shox damper bushings that must precisely match the respective damper eyes and frame mounts.

A damper bushing sits in the eye of the damper. It reduces friction, protects the bolt, and prevents play between the frame and damper. Worn bushings lead to creaking, play, or imprecise handling – so they should be checked regularly and replaced if necessary.

What types of damper bushings are there?

    • Standard bushings for common bolt and width dimensions
    • Manufacturer-specific kits – e.g., Fox damper bushings or Rock Shox damper bushings
    • Special solutions for unusual frame-damper combinations

Whether Fox damper bushings or Rock Shox damper bushings – the choice always depends on the material and dimensions of your bike. With the right parts, you ensure that the suspension and headset work reliably and that you have lasting riding enjoyment.

How deep should the star nut be driven in?

Usually about 15–20 mm below the top edge of the steerer tube. This ensures that the top cap screw grips securely and distributes the preload evenly. Important: do not drive it in too deep, otherwise the headset cannot be adjusted correctly.

Practical tips for installing star nuts and damper bushings

    1. For damper bushings, determine dimensions exactly – only matching bushings prevent play.
    2. Insert bushings with suitable tools, do not jam them.
    3. Install the star nut with a special insertion tool, driving it in evenly.
    4. Carbon steerer tubes: always use an expander/compression plug instead of a star nut.

Star Nut and Suspension – what's the connection?

The star nut on your MTB or e-bike is not directly part of the damping system. Nevertheless, it plays an indirect role in the function of a suspension fork. Only if the headset is correctly adjusted can the suspension fork work without play and optimally develop its spring and damping characteristics. A properly mounted star nut ensures that the fork runs straight, no unwanted movements occur in the head tube, and forces are transferred evenly. This makes it a small but essential link between the frame, headset, and suspension fork.

Conclusion: Star nut and damper bushings are small parts with a big impact

Even if damper bushings and the star nut appear to be inconspicuous small parts at first glance: they are crucial for the functionality of your bike. Damper bushings ensure a play-free and durable connection between the frame and damper – without them, precise handling would hardly be possible. The star nut, in turn, ensures that your headset is correctly preloaded and that the steering works reliably. Both components are therefore elementary parts that ensure stability and riding enjoyment.
